Poem: Love to Hate Me
love to hate me
i haven't forgotten
that miraculous moment
under the starlit sky
your gaze was enough
to lift me above
it felt as if i could fly
you ignited a flame
within my soul
my heart burned with desire
i put my trust in you
who would’ve known
you were such a liar
atop the mountains
we both stood
facing the world ahead of us
no matter what came our way
we stuck together
now without you, i feel powerless
like dying flowers
in the bitter winter
i waited for springtime to return
but winter never ended
where was the spring
that i had yearned for
they say life is a miracle
but i can’t agree
why must it be so painful?
my heart cries for you
in an agonizing tune
i guess love is fatal
you left me alone
to rot in the darkness
you colored me blue
so tell me why
even now
i can’t seem to hate you
So far, I haven’t gotten to 250 words so here’s some background about this poem!
This poem specifically was inspired by withering flowers in the wintertime waiting for springtime to return so that they can blossom once more. Similarly, this unwavering love continues to remain strong despite the apparent toxic relationship that exists between the two “lovers”. I think the title Love to Hate Me is very fitting for the concept and I like the interesting play of words in the phrase. So far, my experiences with poetry have been limited to rhyming with similar structures so for the future, I hope to try different forms and variations of poetry.
