That's A Wrap!
Recalling the beginning of the year brings back both good and bad memories. Though I distinctly remember struggling to understand what in the world the Icarus poems truly meant, I also remember finding the whole analysis process very entertaining. Coming from a summer of minimal reading, one of my goals going into the year was to read more. If I am being completely honest, I haven’t really been reading as much as I had wanted to, but there definitely has been an improvement!
The reading log/reflection we did at the start of the year helped me keep myself accountable for reading a little bit every weekend. Moreover, having the freedom to choose my novels has especially helped increase my reading levels and I have begun to enjoy reading again (woohoo!). I enjoyed being able to experience a variety of literature in class ranging from short stories and plays to novels and movies. My personal favorite remains Albert Camus’ The Stranger just because of how weird of a book it is. The plot itself isn’t anything that captivating but it’s truly like nothing I have seen before.

As for writing, I think I came into the class with a strong grasp of writing well. The “essay-every-monday” strategy in 11AP really made me become a strong writer (was the stress worth it? idk) and having to write college essays over this past semester has most definitely helped me identify my strong points and weaknesses in writing. I believe the writing reflection sheet we used also guided me on how to improve the in-class essays and my positive progression in essay scores provides great evidence for this improvement.
A specific part of analyzing text I have improved on has to be finding the holistic meaning of the work. In our seminars, essays, and reductions, everything went back to the meaning of the work “as a whole”. When I first saw this statement in an essay prompt, I was quite literally stupefied about what to write. Now, however, I have a much better idea of what to consider when it comes to approaching such a prompt.

Overall, I think I have witnessed a lot of growth in myself this year. From enjoying reading again and reading different genres to writing with intent and building off of my essay writing skills from last year, this semester has been a great ride of some change, some stress, and lots of fun.
