How to Get into Your Dream College
I am one of the many fish in the seemingly endless sea of college applicants. To be an ideal student, I’m expected to assume many roles to display my versatility. Merely performing well in academics or extracurriculars isn't enough–I need both. This peculiarity got me to think; what exactly do top colleges seek in an ideal student?
POV: You're a college admissions officer
We want a student who is brilliant in their studies and passions. They must perform well in school, challenging themselves with advanced courses while still maintaining a solid 4.0 unweighted GPA (stress on unweighted). It is important that they take additional classes to excel in these subjects in order to skip or accelerate through courses to acquire many credits. Honors/AP classes are a must and without them, their application won't even be considered. However, the school system may be flawed so standardized testing is required.
In this area, they must also perform extraordinarily well to differentiate themselves among the millions of students who take these exams every year. Four hour tests are not draining compared to what they will face in the future, so these will serve as a simple introduction to their new lives. In the SAT, a 1550 is the baseline score and AP exam scores must all reign between 4 and 5. Fives are strongly preferred, however. Moreover, these students must have received some sort of recognition for their academics to show how much potential they have to succeed. A summa cum laude distinction is a must and they must also receive an AP scholar with distinction award. However, excelling in academics is merely one aspect of these students.
*TRIGGER WARNING*
These students also have to display exemplary qualities to distinguish themselves. From the vast range of extracurriculars, these students have the privilege to choose 10 distinctions that interest them! They must show their artistry in school by having a good position in their band/orchestra/choir/etc. Learning languages is also required and they must continue past the required credits and receive distinction. Participation and leadership in sports is yet another aspect of interest. Volunteering should also be seen, with membership in the National Honors Society and an abundance of volunteer hours. By showing their involvement in clubs, they can earn leadership positions to show how great of a leader they are. A president position is a must and the student must actively participate in many other clubs. These students must also receive well-written recommendation letters by fostering a connection with their teachers. Additional contests wherein these students have placed high are also favorable. These students should also have involvement and experience in activities outside of school such as summer programs, internships, jobs and other foundations. Obviously, this is all simply a baseline. Going above and beyond is what will make them stand out.
But most importantly of all, they have to answer many questions to appeal to the college and show their interest and commitment. These questions are in essay format and will ultimately decide their acceptance. This time may be stressful with so many applications to fill out and essays to complete. Regardless, an ideal student must continue academic rigor in their senior year.
Now, we invite you to apply to our prestigious university! Chances are....you won't get in :)
